Monastery of St. George of Koziba
Judean Wilderness, Israel
(circa 420, rebuilt in 1179 and ca. 1900)
Image of the monastery.
Almost 1,600 years ago, a group of hermit monks built this monastery into the remote cliffs in the desert of Israel so that they could live apart from the rest of the world. Because the local stone of the cliffs was used as building material, the monastery appears to grow naturally from its site.
