World War I slowed the economy and Wright had a hard time finding people who wanted his buildings. During and after World War I, from 1914 to 1923, he traveled back and forth to Japan, designing and supervising construction of the massive Imperial Hotel complex in Tokyo. It had hundreds of guest rooms, a ballroom, and a banquet hall. Wright's innovative structural design saved the building from being destroyed by a devastating earthquake in 1923.
