Wright was greatly influenced by Japanese art and architecture. Europe was a popular destination for most artists and architects at the time, but in 1905 Wright and his wife Catherine visited Japan instead. Wright took pictures of Japanese temples, waterfalls, and other examples of nature. Wright was inspired by Japanese art and he amassed a huge collection over his lifetime. He often displayed it in his homes and architectural studios. Throughout his life he said Japanese art inspired him because it eliminated all but the essential elements of any design.
