Fallingwater
Interior of Fallingwater
Detail of Fallingwater's interior
The clients for this project asked Wright to design a summer home. They had purchased a site in the woods of Pennsylvania with rocky outcroppings and a waterfall.
Wright used his ideas about incorporating landscape into the building to design a house that juts out over the waterfall. The long rectangular balconies
resemble the layers of sandstone boulders that make up the waterfall. The walls and floor are made of uneven stone left in its natural state, so that it
feels like the house grew out of the landscape around it. A stairway leads down from the living room to the stream. Many of the windows wrap around
corners to open up the space. The sleeping areas are on the top floor to take advantage of the best views of the surrounding forest. Fallingwater
became one of the most famous buildings in the world, and Wright became immensely popular.
